Title:Research Technician III

The Research Technician III will provide essential research support including computer-based analysis and modeling, assistance with field and laboratory research, assistance with preparation of grant applications and manuscripts, and day-to-day management of the lab.


Major duties and responsibilities:

1. Provide statistical analysis support to the Supervisor, including using appropriate statistical programming software to implement statistical models designed by the supervisor, and well as conducting computer simulations to evaluate the performance of statistical models.
2. Organize research-related travel, including for marine fieldwork, and participate in field trips. It is anticipated that the incumbent will ultimately develop the capability to lead such trips when the Supervisor is unavailable.
3. Assistance with the creation of databases, including extraction of information from scientific literature and construction of database architecture
4. Day-to-day management of databases and websites
5. Assistance with preparation of presentations and scientific papers, such as preparing schematics and graphical depictions of research results.
6. Assistance with grants and permits preparation, such as formatting, budget preparation, and cross-checking compliance of the proposal with agency requirements.
7. Purchasing of supplies and equipment, and making travel arrangements, to ensure smooth operation of the research enterprise within the research budget available.



1. Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, biological sciences with a strong quantitative component, or related discipline, and/or
2. A Bachelor’s degree in one of the above areas, with a minimum of three (3) year’s experience
3. Statistical programming skills (e.g., the statistical software program R), including the ability to write functions and perform stochastic simulations.
4. Knowledge of key statistical concepts such as likelihood to be able to write code to fit novel statistical models (designed by the Supervisor or collaborators) to data, using either frequentist or Bayesian methods.
5. Capacity to obtain STRI scientific diving approval, and to obtain Panamanian boat and car driver licenses.
6. Ability to communicate with and relate to a wide range of people fluently in both English and Spanish in a multicultural environment.
